The Age of Despotism
Portrait of General James Wolfe The Age of Despotism is designed for students, who have the desire to discover the grandeur of a bygone era, including the political and social forces that redefined Europe from 1640 to 1763. This will be accomplished by a series of lectures and discussions during the course of the semester. In the process, we will rediscover the world of Louis XIV, the fate of Charles I, the rise of Prussia, and threats posed by the Ottomans as well as the diplomatic revolution occurring in Europe. The spread of the Enlightenment and the cultural domination of Europe will be extensively reviewed too. From Europe the class will move to the New World, as the traditional European powers sought to carve out their own domains, often at the expense of indigenous populations, in the forests of the Western Hemisphere. As a result conflicts developed that created the climate for the future revolutions that followed. This site includes a bibliography, assigned texts, assignments, class syllabus, First Midterm, Final Exam, and PowerPoint notes.
