Today in History:

On October 2, 1780, Major John André, a British spy associated with Benedict Arnold, was executed on this day in history.

Quote of the Day:

"In my view we are much worse off now than when we went into Iraq. This is not a partisan position. I voted for these guys."

A senior figure at a military-sponsored think tank as told to James Fallows in "Bush's Lost Year" in The Atlantic Monthly (Oct. 2004)

Current History

Introduction:

The course is designed for students interested in the political and social issues that are currently the focus of the nightly news. What is happening in the Middle East? What is happening in Iraq? What's happening in Washington, Europe, and the rest of the world? How do you feel about President Bush? What's your opinion of the CIA Leak case? Domestic spying? Those issues and many more will be the heart of this class, especially how do those news items influence the world in which we live? Students are expected to read the the New York Times, which is available for free in the Memorial Union. Students should check those sections concerning  politics, economics, international affairs, and the op-ed section. Students should also watch the Sunday talk shows -- Meet the Press, Face the Nation, and This Week as well as Chris Matthew's Hardball. There is only one text for the class and involves domestic American politics by Maureen Dowd, and additional sources can be found on the bibliography of Current History texts.

Textbook:

Maureen Dowd. Bushworld: Enter at your own Risk. Berkley Trade, 2005

Attendance and Grades:

Attendance is important and students will be graded not only on how they participate in the discussions during class, but also whether they come to class as well. Each student will start off with 100 points, miss three sessions and a student will lose fifty percent of that total. Another 100 points is based upon their level of participation during the class.
