Directions: Select on of the following questions and write a comprehensive essay providing the analysis and evidence necessary to answer the question as fully as possible. The paper should be no less than five double-spaced pages in length. The Essay is due to the instructor of record by final week. 1. Americans were shocked by the destruction of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995. For the most part, Americans were not familiar with the history of right wing extremism. Many thought that this was an anomaly. Was their assumption true? What factors best explain the rise of right wing terrorism in the United States during the 1990s? Why has it declined? 2. Women have played key roles in traditional terrorist organizations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. What specifically did they do? What part did they play in the People's Will, the FLN, the Baader-Meinhof gang as well as other terrorist movements? How would you evaluate their level of commitment? What threat did women pose in terrorist movements? What part, if any, do women play in Islamic terrorist movements? Explain. 3. Walter Laqueur in his book No End to War documents the failure of intelligence agencies in discovering the Al Qaeda attack on the World Trade Center attack in 2001. What went wrong? Who was responsible? 4. How does Hollywood portray terrorism? What liberties, if any, do writers and directors take? How does Hollywood alter contemporary events in order to bring a visual portrayal of the horrors of terrorism to the silver screen? Compare and contrast the plots of current fiction and film and analyze the storylines used in each in an effort to determine the effectiveness of their craft in understanding terrorism. What books and films are the most effective? Explain. 5. Laqueur before writing No End to War wrote another study entitled The New Terrorism. Is there a “new terrorism?” If so, how different is it from the traditional terrorism of the nineteenth century? How have strategies and tactics used by previous terrorist organizations changed in their continual struggle against mainline governments? What separates the two eras? 6. What is the future of terrorism? From your readings, what sort of attacks can happen in the future? How much nations prepare for the next wave of world-wide terrorism?
