Denying The Obvious: The Holocaust and Modern MemoryHolocaustFall 2008Some Thoughts Holocaust Denial is a major component of the racist and extreme right. Both in the United States and in Europe. The extreme right, i.e, David Duke and Willis Carto, have published some of the worst examples. The deny the Anne Franks Diary, the gas chambers at Auschwitz, and the actual number of victims. Sometimes, defenders of the First Amendment, for example Noam Chomsky, has defended some of the most egregious figures in the denial movement.Questioning World War I Americans led the war in questioning the origins of World War I. Sidney B. Fay lead the way. Followed by Harry Elmer Barnes, who wrote The Genesis of the World War. He became the dean of Holocaust deniers. Charles Beard, a leading American historian followed with questioning FDRs motives in 1941.Even Henry Ford Played a Part Henry Ford in his Dearborn Independent published the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Which is still in publication, even when we know that they are a fraud. After World War II, John T. Flynn published The Roossevelt Myth. Flynn argued that the only victor in World War II was Stalin. The Rise of the Relativists Some pointed to the transfer of Germans from the lost territories. Joe McCarthy defended the murderers of Malmedy and put the U.S. Army on trial after World War II. Many of the articles in the IHR defend Germany and the Nazis. The Liberty Lobby is dedicated to just that effort. The First Attempts to Deny the Holocaust The first attempt came in France with Maurice Bardeche. Bardeche was a fascist and a collaborator during the war. In 1947, he wrote Letter to Francois Mauriac, in which he defended collaboration with the Nazis during the war. In a subsequent book, Nuremberg or the Promised Land, he claimed that the evidence at the IWCT was doctored. He argued that the Germans did not commit atrocities during the war. The real culprit were the Jews. He was a committed fascist all of his life. The Tale of Paul Rassinier He was a former Communist. He spent time in Buchenwald and Dora. He then wrote Crossing the Line. In this book he claimed that the German crimes during the Holocaust were exaggerated. For the next two decades he wrote a number of books that were filled with lies and distortions. In 1977, he wrote a single volume entitled Debunking the Genocide Myth. The Consequence of the European Deniers The early deniers went after the numbers of victims. Combined with the American revisionists, they set the ground work for problems we currently face today. The Early Years in Cold War America The Cold War help foster a growth of denial. Often anti-Semitism was a major factor. Many of the early American deniers were influenced by Paul Rassinier. Those deniers thought the markets were controlled by International Zionism. One early denier, W. D. Herrstrom, in Bible News Flashes (1952) argued that the victims of the alleged Holocaust were not victims at all, but illegal aliens in the U.S.Denial and American Fascism The most famous American Nazi, George Lincoln Rockwell, called the Holocaust a monstrous and profitable fraud. Harry Elmer Barnes gave the movement legitimacy. After World War II, he claimed that Hitlers aims were legitimate. In 1952, he claimed that FDRs policies were the greatest crime in human history.Barnes Helps Other Deniers Barnes helped David Leslie Hoggan publish his book, The Forced War. Hoggan argued that Hitler was forced into the conflict. Barnes then in the American Mercury attacked the Holocaust in The Zionist Fraud. He saw the Einsatzgruppen as soldiers fighting the Reds in Russia. He always attacked his critics with venom, often in anti-Semitic tones.General Trends Fringe academics were attracted to denying the Holocaust. Austin J. App was one such character. He never had the academic record of Barnes. He considered the Holocaust a hoax. He felt that the Holocaust was an unjustified moral burden on Germany. His field was English literature. He claimed that Henry Morganthau hoodwinked FDR. He denied Hitlers evil intent, since Hitler was a man of art, not of war. Furthermore, the Allies started the war.Austin P. Apps Later Career In 1945, he claimed that the Germans did not commit any atrocities during the war. In 1946, he challenged the numbers of victims. The Holocaust in his mind was the work of Talmudists and Bolsheviks. He continued this charge in 1973 with the publication of his book The Six Million Swindle.Apps Denial of Jewish Victims He argued that immigration not annihilation was the goal of the Reich. Gas was not used a Auschwitz. The alleged victims were living in the Soviet Union. The Holocaust is perpetuated by the Jewish controlled media. The Jews who actually died were enemies of the Reich. He became a pillar of anti-Semitic and Holocaust denial in the U.S. and Europe.General Trends of Holocaust Denial Starting in the 1960s and 1970s Fascism was on the upsurge. In 1977, the National Front in the UK polled 250,000 votes. The National Front embraced racism, ethnocentrism, and nationalism. The only way for fascism to grow was to deny the Holocaust. The Growth in the U.S. Deniers found support in the person of Willis Carto. Who gained control of the Liberty Lobby. Who in turn owned Noontide Press. Which published The Myth of the Six Million. Who started the Institute for Historical Review. The long term objective of Carto was to make political fascism possible. Later on, Carto would attempt to wreck the IHR. The funding came from the heirs of Thomas Edison. The Coming of Arthur Butz: The Poster Scholar for the Neo-Nazis and Klan He was a tenured faculty member at Northwestern since 1974. There he wrote The Hoax of the Twentieth Century. Since he talk at Northwestern, he gave denial respectability. Unlike other deniers, he never claimed that Jews were not a threat. He tried to present the image that he was a legitimate scholar and critical of anti-SemitismButz in the 1980s By 1985, he was giving presentations for Louis Farakhan. He utilized conspiracy arguments blended with traditional anti-Semitism that supported his twisted logic. He claimed the the government has been forging documents about the Holocaust. His main venue was the Institute for Historical Review. Why Traditional Scholars Have Not Accept the Denier Position? Butz argued that traditional scholars were frightened to tell the truth. As a consequence, non-historians have picked up the argument by default. Butz did have to admit that most deniers were anti-Semitic. Still, since the normal channels of scholarship were closed to them, they had to go to the IHR.Keys to Butz The Holocaust is perpetuated by forged documents. The confessions of German war criminals were coerced. Consequently, the media has contributed to what he called the Holocaust legend. Most survivors were lying about what had happened so long ago.The Case of Ernst Zundel He was a German citizen living in Canada under immigrant status. In 1984 he was arrested for instigating racial and social intolerance. He wrote anti-Semitic tracts The West, War, and Islam and We Love You Adolf Hitler. In 1985, he was found guilty and won on appeal. In the second trial, David Irving and Fred Leuchter came to his defense. The Leuchter Report Upon the urgings of other deniers, he went to Auschwitz/Birkenau and Majdanek in Poland. He brought with him a draftsman, filmmaker, and interpreter. He gathered, or he claimed, forensic samples at the site. He then had the results published in what deniers called the Leuchter Report. Irving, Zundel, and others published it. Leuchter denied that the sites were gas chambers. A Canadian court attacked the authenticity of the report as well as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. What Is The Objective of the Deniers? You Can Read More About It
