Recommended Readings

Over the years you have probably read about the lives of Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower. But if you haven't of if you need a refresher and would like to do some, and strictly optional, reading in advance of the Elderhostel, we recommend the following books. Some, probably most, and perhaps all, are available at your local library, and all are in print and can be purchased or ordered in paperback at your local bookstore.
On Harry Truman:
David McCullough, Truman. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1992. Paperback price: $22.00.
Donald R. McCoy. The Presidency of Harry S. Truman. Rev. ed., Lawrence: University Press of Kansas, 1990. Paperback price: $15.95. This is a much shorter account of the Truman presidential years.
On Dwight Eisenhower:
Geoffrey Perret. Eisenhower. New York: Adams Media Corp., 2000. Paperback price $15.95. The latest extensive biography of Ike's entire career and approved by Stephen Ambrose.
Chester J. Pach and Elmo Richardson. The Presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Rev. ed., Lawrence: University Press of Kansas, 1991. Paperback price $15.95. A good short work on Ike's presidency.
On the Truman-Eisenhower Relationship:
Steve Neal. Harry and Ike: The Partnership That Remade the Postwar World. New York: Touchstone, 2001. Paperback price: $14.00. A new book that has caused quite a stir. We named the Elderhostel Harry and Ike before the book was published.
The books can be purchased online at Abebooks and Amazon as well as E. R. Hamilton Booksellers another online book service.
