Quote of the Day:

"In my view we are much worse off now than when we went into Iraq. This is not a partisan position. I voted for these guys."

Splendid Little Wars

This course is designed for undergraduates, teachers, and interested graduate students so that they may be better informed concerning armed conflict, especially those engagements currently called "military operations other than war." How did the British and the United States use small-scale conflicts to either ensure the peace or expand their commercial empires? Likewise what problems did the Soviets face when Soviet forces invaded Afghanistan in late 1979? Why do the powers become engaged in the undeveloped world? How are those operations conducted? And more important, can we learn from those experiences? The class will cover a number of those conflicts during the three week summer session. Topics include: The Barbary Wars, The Crimean War, The Indian Wars, Butcher and Bolt Operations, The Spanish-American War, The Philippine Insurrection, The Boer War, The Boxer Rebellion, The Banana Wars, The Afghan Wars, The Gulf Wars, and the situation in Somalia.
