Undergraduate Assignments and Grades for Splendid Little Wars
Grades will be based for undergraduates on one take home examination due to the instructor by August 15, 2003 and a book review over one of the books used during the class for undergraduates. For extra credit students may write a second book review for the course from the texts used in the class or from the bibliography provided. The take home examination should be no less than five double space typed pages. The same applies to the book review. For undergraduate students who do not know how to write a book review, check the webpage for the course for hints of how to successfully complete the assignment. To see how a book review is done, students can either check the New York Review of Books or The New York Times Book Review available in the library or on my website. All students will be required to take the pre/post examination. The grade from the post examination will be included in the final determination of your final grade. The final assignment is a group project, where students will break into groups and function as an ad hoc NSC staff group making recommendations to the President concerning the situation in Somalia during the Clinton Presidency. Students will use the Ward Carroll's Punk's War, to understand the operations on an aircraft carrier, and Mark Bowden's Black Hawk Down as reference tools and make their recommendations in-class on July 24. Final grades will be determined by take-home examination, class discussion, group project/student exercise, and the post-test grade. Likewise, the plus and minus grading system will not be used.
