World War II Essays
Directions: You may use all the materials available to you in order to answer the assignment. Likewise, your essay should be at the minimum of five, double-spaced pages in length. See the course schedule for the appropriate due date. 1. The late Lawrence Stone was a respected English historian. One of his lasting achievements before his death was the development of a model that explained the origins of wars and revolutions. According to Stone, the first elements are the preconditions, the factors that make war possible. The second includes the precipitants, the short-term tensions that make conflict highly likely. Triggers are the final category in Stone’s model. Those time-specific reasons that contribute to the outbreak of the conflict. Use this model to explain the origins of the Second World War in either Europe or Asia, but not both. You may use your notes, texts, the Internet, library materials in order to complete your essay; however, you should focus on either the European component of the conflict or the road to war in Asia. 2. Adolf Hitler has been deemed the main instigator in the coming of World War II by the historians and the public following the war. Then along came A. J. P. Taylor and his classic study, The Origins of the Second World War. What role did Hitler play in the coming of the conflict? Was World War II possible without Hitler? Explain. 3. Japan has had a love-hate relationship with China throughout the long history of the two Asia nations. What was the problem? Why did Japan embark on her China adventure? Explain. 4. The Germans were extremely successful in their offensive against the Western Democracies in May-June 1940. The media at the time referred to German offensive doctrine as "Blitzkrieg." But what was it? What innovations did the Germans bring to World War II? Why was the Wehrmacht initially successful? Why did Hitler's generals fail against Russia in 1941 to deliver a knock out blow to the Red Army during Operation of Barbarossa? 5. Surprise is a state of mind. Rarely is a nation totally caught off guard during the initial period of war; however, political leadership on the other hand often fails to believe the intelligence that is presented. Sometimes that is called selective perception. What intelligence warnings did Stalin have before the Germans commenced Operation Barbarossa? 6. For years following World War II, FDR's detractors constantly believed that Roosevelt either knew about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor or created the climate that allowed the attack to happen. What really happened on December 7, 1941? What did Washington know before the Japanese struck on that fateful day in December? Explain. 7. Following the Battle of France, many believed that the England would be Hitler's next victim. Why did Hitler failed to invade England? Was an invasion possible? Could Hitler have pulled it off? Explain how it could have been done.
